At Puto Ranch, we need our horses to be willing and trainable - calm and intelligent - for ranch work as well as for parades !

These pictures show "Lonesome Steve" working with a young colt.

Note, there is No Bridle on this horse !

Winter months are often spent starting young horses, getting them calm and socialized.

Swinging and throwing a rope on a young horse, bridle-less, for the first time - Steve Puto demonstrates the basic willing, calm nature of the horses that come from his years of breeding quarter horses.

Summer months are spent working on the ranch, trail riding with friends and generally enjoying these fine horses.

The picture left was taken in the summer of 2005 while I was out looking at some of the foals.

As so often happens with these black horses, the foal hair browns off in the summer and is slowly replaced with the nice deep black color that these horses will have at maturity.

Look at the hair around a foal's eyes - once the baby fuzz begins to shed - that is the color the horse will be, when all the haircoat is changed over.
